Mother’s Day and Stevie Wonder I got caught on camera when I was at the Grammy’s Motown 60th special that aired on CBS a few weeks back. Those who saw me and took screenshots and videos of their TV’s, thank you for letting me know! One of the first concerts I remember was seeing Stevie Wonder perform when I was a kid. As I watched him live at that concert back in the 80’s, I wanted to meet him in person and I asked my mom. She told me we needed a pass to get backstage. Not being deterred from my new mission, I asked her if I could go to the bathroom and I snuck backstage. A guard stopped me and asked what I was doing there and I told him “I’m writing an article for my school newspaper and I have to do an interview with Stevie Wonder”. Luckily, Stevie's drummer saw me and what was happening and came over and told the guard I was ok being there and let me through. I went back to my seat and she asked “what took me so long?”. I held up the passes to my mom and told her we are going to meet him later! The drummer got backstage passes for me and my mother and we met Stevie with the press after the show. After the Motown special, I wanted to call her and share with her about how his performance was as inspiring as it was back then and how Motown’s legacy inspires me to create music that can last throughout the ages. Me and my mom used to write songs together. I don’t think many people knew that side of her legacy. She was a great lyricist and we studied songwriting together when I was a kid and there was a lot of Motown! I recently received a 501c3 status for the Carolyn Bell Foundation in honor of her legacy.
